Computerized Exam FAQ

The following is a FAQ regarding computerized exams.  We have also posted this FAQ to the registrar’s website under exams.  Best of luck to all of you on your exams!

Q: What do I do if my exam id begins with a zero?

If your exam id begins with a zero, drop the zero when entering it into the Exam4 program.  For example, if your exam number is 0201, just type 201.  If your exam id is 0056, just type 56.  This also applies to take home exam students when retrieving you exam question via the Exam4 website.

Q: How do I test the software?

Be sure to test the software several times before your exams start.  Select “Practice Exam” in the drop down menu for the course.  You should “submit electronically” when you are finished to make sure your wireless connection is working properly.

Q: How do I launch exam4?

Always click on the red “e” from your desktop to launch exam4.  Vista users may see an additional turquoise blue icon with a red “z” in the middle which is the zipped install file.  You may delete that turquoise blue file from your desktop.

Q: The delete key doesn’t work when I type in Exam4.

This is a deliberate programming necessity of the exam software and not a bug.  You may still block or highlight text and delete and use the backspace key to delete text.

Q: The word count seems 1 or 2 words off when I show document statistics.

The word count will count the dividers.  The dashes between the words “Answer-to-question-___” make that string count as one word.  The lines of dashes also count as a word.   The system was designed with the expectation that word count would typically be used where the limit is in the hundreds of words, and where the one or two extra words indicated would not be an issue.

Q: Should I use the answer separators?

Do not use answer separators unless you want to use word count.

Q: What do I do if my computer freezes during an exam?

Come outside of your exam room and get a proctor.  Do not try to troubleshoot the problem yourself.  You will get the time back that you lost due to you computer problems.

Q: When I launch into CLOSED book mode, I get a security scan that can last about a minute.

When Exam4 launches, it checks to make sure you didn't install any software that could interfere with the security of the program.  This is necessary to make sure no one can cheat.  This security check can take up to 2 minutes, but typically only takes about 20 seconds after you have taken your first practice exam with the software.  We suggest you start writing your exam number on every page of your exam and reading the exam questions while the security check is taking place.

Q: Does Exam4 work with Leopard?

Yes, Exam4 has recently verified that Exam4 works with Leopard.  However, our wireless network still does not work with Leopard.  You may use a Mac with Leopard OS and Exam4 installed to take your exam, but you will need to make sure you can connect to our network via an ethernet cable in order to upload your exam.

Q: What do I do if I get an email from the Registrar’s office saying that my exam has not uploaded?

Students are required to check their email for several days after exams.  If the registrar’s office did not receive your exam, the registrar’s office will send an email message to your law school email account asking you to upload your exam again.  Open Exam4 and Select existing exam.  Find the exam that you need to upload by looking at the file name (Exam ID_Date (YYMMDD)_Course-Instructor).  Highlight that exam and click “Submit Electronically.”

Q: How do I download the newest version of Exam4?

  1. Go to www.exam4.com.

  2. Click on Law Schools, P (for Pennsylvania), Villanova School of Law.

  3. Scroll to very bottom and fill in your name and email address (twice) and select your operating system.  [Please be sure to select the correct operating system.  We have seen a number of problems due to the fact that students have installed the incorrect OS version on their laptop.]

  4. Click “Submit form” and follow install instructions provided.

  5. Exam 4 should launch automatically.  You will see a screen that says “Welcome to Exam4, Please take a practice exam.”  Click Ok.

  6. You should see “Villanova School of Law” in yellow letters.  This is how you know you have the newest take home version on your laptop.  You may now take a practice exam if you wish or click Quit.

Q: How do I download my take home exam question?

  1. Go to www.exam4.com.

  2. Click on Law Schools, P (for Pennsylvania), Villanova School of Law.

  3. You will see “Take Home Exams” listed at the top of the page.  When your exam is available, you will see it listed under “Take Home Exams.”  To practice downloading an exam question, click on “F07 Admin use only 1.”

  4. Type in your exam id and click “Continue.”  Those of you with an exam id that starts with a zero should drop the proceeding zero placeholders and just type the number.  E.g., if your exam id is 0201, just type 201.  Only those exam ids associated with a particular course will be able to access the take home exam.  If you are denied access, make sure you have typed in your exam id correctly.  If you are still denied access, contact the Registrar’s office.

  5. You will see a Confirmation screen that reminds you that once you click the “View exam question button,” the clock will start on your time.  Check the box next to “confirm,” and Click “View exam question.”

  6. If you scroll down you will see your final exam question(s) contained in the text box window.  You may copy and paste the entire exam into Exam4 or any other word processing application.

  7. You may also have the exam question(s) emailed to you by typing in your email address and clicking “Submit.”

  8. Once you have retrieved your exam question(s), you may close the web browser and start working on your exam answer in any word processing program or Exam4.
