Computerized Exams Announcement
Dear 1L Students,
Your Legal Research professors are allowing the use of our Exam4 computerized exam software for the Legal Research Exam on Wednesday, November 5. This means that all of you have the option of taking the Legal Research Exam on your laptop computers or a Law School desktop PC found in room 103. You also have the option of writing your exam answers by hand if this is your preference.
You must be running Windows XP, Vista, Mac Tiger or Leopard on your laptop computer to use the software.
Those of you who would like to take your exam on your laptop (or law school desktop PC) are required to register and attend training. Once you attend training this semester, you will not have to attend training at the end of the semester for your final exams. You will already have the software installed and will have been trained in how to use the software for your final exams.
Registration
A registration form will be posted here, under “Training Registration,” starting on Thurs., September 25, 2008. You must have your Wildcard number to sign up and attend the session. Contact the University Wildcard office if you do not have a Wildcard.
Training Sessions
We will begin training on October 7, 2008. Each training session will last approximately 40 minutes. The following sessions will be offered:
Session A: Tues., 10/7/2008, 9:30 AM, Rm 29
Session B: Tues., 10/7/2008, 12:40 PM, Rm 103

Session F: Thurs., 10/9/2008, 3:00 PM, Rm 102
Changing Your Session
You may change your session through the website by clicking on “Change Your Training Information” from here. After entering your Wildcard number, the system will show your registration information (session, laptop or law school PC, date registered, and whether you have already attended). You may change your registration information or sign up for a different session by clicking on the “Edit” button.
Wireless Network
We upload all typed exam answers via our wireless network. Thus, if you are having problems with your wireless card, you must visit the Computer Services office found on the main floor of the library as soon as possible to see what can be done. Your wireless connection should be working before you undergo training.
Law School Desktop PC Users
Room 103 Desktop PCs are reserved on a first come, first served basis through the registration form. Make sure to indicate on the form whether you will be using a laptop or wish to reserve a law school PC in room 103 for exams.
Information about Computerized Exams
In a nutshell, our exam software allows you to take exams on your laptop while locking out access to all other files. Upon completing the exam, the software will save an encrypted version of the exam that will be uploaded via our wireless network. The registrar's office will decrypt and print out your exam for your professor.
If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact Justin Barber, our Information and Administrative Computing Coordinator, at barber@law.villanova.edu or April Barton, Assistant Dean for Academic Computing, at barton@law.villanova.edu.
