Clinics & Externships
Registration
As explained below, students will have three opportunities to register for clinical courses and two opportunities to register for externships:
- Clinic Early Admission Period: April 7 - April 14, 2008
- On-Line Registration Phases I and II: (Dates TBA)
- On-Line Registration Phase III (Drop/Add Period)
Students who apply during the Clinic Early Admission Period have the greatest likelihood of getting a clinic position and will be most able to create their course schedule around their clinic responsibilities.
Because of the unique nature of clinical courses and the need to have sufficient students to handle all of the client matters, students who are enrolled in a clinic must commit to the course within a specified time frame by signing a letter of acceptance, which can be obtained in the Clinic Office, room 7, from Pat Brown, Clinic Office Administrator.
Students may not drop a clinic course after the dates specified below, without permission from the faculty.
1. Early Admission Period (Clinics Only)
Registration
The early admission period is designed to help students schedule their other classes in light of their Clinic obligations. Early Admissions requests will be accepted for both the Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 semesters between April 7th and April 14th. During this period, students will use the on-line clinic registration form, and not NOVASIS, to request and rank their preferences for clinics. Click here to access the CARES, Civil Justice, Farmworker Legal Aid, and Federal Tax Clinic registration form. If more requests than spaces are available for a particular clinic, a lottery will be run. Admission to the CARES Clinic is by written application. No lottery will be run for enrollment in the CARES Clinic. The CARES Clinic application form must be completed and returned by April 14th. With the exception of Spring semester Farmworker Clinic, Tax Clinic, and the CARES Clinic, preference for clinics will be given to rising 3Ls who have not previously taken a clinic. For the Spring semester of the Farmworker Clinic, preference for two (2) slots of Farmworker Clinic will be given to rising 2Ls. For the Spring semester of Tax Clinic, preference for two (2) slots of Tax Clinic shall be given to rising 2Ls who will have completed Introduction to Taxation by the end of the fall semester of the second year of law school. No student will be placed in more than one clinic or be permitted to take both a clinic and externship in the same semester. Students can be on more than one clinic wait list.
Notification
CARES, Civil Justice, Farmworker Legal Aid, and Federal Tax Clinic students will be notified of their enrollment in a clinical course on April 23th by the Registrar's Office.
Student Commitment
Students who are enrolled in any of the clinics and do not plan to participate must drop no later than May 12th. Drops must be emailed to Pat Brown at brown@law.villanova.edu. All students who accept a clinical position must sign an Acceptance Agreement by May 12th. Acceptance Agreement forms are located in the Clinic Office, Room 7. Please see Pat Brown in Room 7 for a form.
2. On-Line Registration Phases I and II
Students will have the opportunity to request both clinics and externships for both the Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 semesters on a space-permitting basis during the on-line registration period, which begins on Monday, May 12, 2008, at 8:00 a.m. Click here for further details about the on-line registration process. Please note that some externships have special requirements and deadlines. It is the student’s responsibility to consult the course description before registering for an externship and comply with any requirements or deadlines that apply to that externship. In the event that a student registers for an externship without meeting all of the special requirements and/or deadlines, the Registrar’s Office will remove the externship from the student’s schedule without notice to the student.
Students registering for clinics must request their first choice, and only their first choice, in NOVASIS. If a student is requesting more than one clinic, the student must rank his/her preferences using the on-line clinic request form. Preference for clinics will be given to rising 3Ls who have not previously taken a clinic. In addition, no student may be on more than one clinic wait list.
Student Commitment
Students who are enrolled during the normal registration period in any of the clinics and do not plan to participate, must drop no later than July 15th. Drops on or before July 15 must be done on Novasis. Your commitment to the clinic is an indication of the professional responsibility you will be entrusted with in your live client matters. Given the demands associated with certifying students for practice in respective clinics and the importance of advance notice needed to schedule appropriate client matters, drops will not be permitted later than July 15 barring extraordinary circumstances and without consent of the faculty supervisor of the particular clinic in which the student was enrolled.
3. On-Line Registration Phase III
Registration
Externships
Generally, the registration process for externships during Registration Phase III is the same as the process for any other course. Some externships, however, have special requirements and deadlines.
Clinics
Registration for clinics during add/drop cannot be done through NOVASIS and must be done through the on-line registration form. Given the demands associated with certifying students for practice in respective clinics and the importance of advance notice needed to schedule appropriate client matters, drops will not be permitted later than July 15 barring extraordinary circumstances and without consent of the faculty supervisor of the particular clinic in which the student was enrolled.
