Service Awards
Villanova University School of Law and the Villanova Law Alumni Association confer three awards upon alumni on March 13, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. at the Union League of Philadelphia. Tickets are $50 per person and $500 for a table of ten. The Alumni Association will present the Gerald Abraham Alumni Association Award for Service to Villanova Law School to James L. McHugh, Esq. ’62 and the Donald W. Dowd Alumni Association Award for Public Service to Mark S. Schwartz ’74. Dean Mark A. Sargent will present J. Gordon Cooney , Jr., Esq. '84 with the St. Thomas of Villanova Award for Pro Bono Service. For more information call (610) 519-7054.
The Alumni Association seeks award nominations from all members of the Villanova Law Community. Read below to learn more about the awards, the nomination guidelines and the achievements of past recipients.
Awards & Descriptions:
- Villanova Law Alumni Association Award for Excellence
This award will be presented in honor of the Association’s 50th Anniversary to an alumnus or alumna who, through significant contributions to justice, the law and the legal profession, has achieved recognized prominence in his or her chosen career by consistently demonstrating excellence in the values of critical thinking, mutual respect and a responsibility to those in need, and, in doing so, has brought distinction and honor to the Law School.
- Gerald Abraham Alumni Association Award for Service to Villanova Law School
This award recognizes outstanding service by alumni to their alma mater. It is presented to alumni who have exhibited outstanding leadership qualities and made significant contributions in time or otherwise to assist the Law School in fulfilling its mission and goals.
- Donald W. Dowd Alumni Association Award for Public Service
This award recognizes outstanding service by alumni to society, exemplifying the University's roots in the Catholic and Augustinian traditions. It is presented to alumni who have dedicated time and energy to the public welfare to ameliorate the lives of the less fortunate and society at large.
- St. Thomas of Villanova Award for Pro Bono Service
This award is presented to alumni of Villanova University School of Law who have performed exceptional pro bono work since graduation, exemplifying the ideals of this law school.
- Law Alumni Association Award for Pro Bono Service
This award is given to the third-year student who has contributed the most meaningful pro bono service to those in need.
The Gerald Abraham and Donald Dowd Awards are presented each year at the Association's Awards Dinner. The St. Thomas of Villanova Award may not be presented annually. The Law Alumni Award for Pro Bono Service is presented each year at the Association's Third Year Brunch, which honors the graduating class.
